The Competition

Don’t let the page title fool you.  I’m not here to compete.  That’s not the point.  The point is we should respect the competition, no matter who it is.  Listed below are some teams who have found their way into Kinnick Stadium to feel the wrath of the fans sitting just steps away from them on that sideline.  I’ve read numerous accounts from many different media outlets that opposing teams view Kinnick as one of their most memorable experiences.  This page will get updated throughout each week, hopefully showcasing a shot of mine that embodies the spirit of the opposing team.

Sparty and Coach Mark Dantonio lead Michigan State onto the Kinnick turf in 2011. Coach Dantonio has said on numerous occasions that he modeled his program based on the Iowa Hawkeyes under Coach Ferentz.

The Pitt Panthers gave Iowa all they could handle in 2011. Pitt jumped out to a 24-3 lead to start the 4th quarter, but Iowa completed the greatest comeback in Hawkeye history and won 31-27. I was there!

The Michigan Wolverines, led by QB Denard Robinson brought in the excitement in typical Michigan fashion in 2011. It was a great game that came down to the closing minutes as Iowa extended their winning streak against Michigan to 3 games.

Iowa State visited Kinnick Stadium on September 8, 2012. The Cyclones won the game by a score of 9-6.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers came to Kinnick in 2012 with Floyd of Rosedale in tow. I love the new look of the Gopher’s uniforms. That dull maroon helmet is very sharp, in my opinion. Unfortunately for the Gophers, the Hawkeyes were too much to handle on this day and Floyd is safely back at Kinnick for the next year.

If there was ever a football player whose face embodies his team’s spirit, it is Mike Zordich. To the fans, Mike was a team spokesman during the Sandusky saga that demoralized the entire Penn State fan base.  Zordich rallied his team during the offseason, after severe sanctions were handed to Penn State by the NCAA, and challenged his team to stick together through all the adversity.  Zordich and Penn State played at Kinnick on October 20, 2012 and beat the Hawkeyes 38-14.
